Mechanical Estimator, Junior - Morriston, ON

NAC is currently seeking a Junior Mechanical Estimator with Water & Wastewater experience to join our Head Office team located in Morriston, ON (Hwy 401/Hwy 6). Individuals with trade experience are also encouraged to apply!

Position Summary:

The Junior Estimator is an entry-level position where the individual will learn the fundamental principles within the Estimating Department. This position is interactive as the individual will coordinate with other disciplines within and outside the estimating department, participate in dept. meetings & functions, and support the operations dept. post tender with estimate reviews & issues.  The employee will understand and implement their basic responsibilities and aid other estimators in their respective discipline during, and after the Bid Tendering Stage. The Junior Estimator will understand and implement the basic processes and procedures of their discipline while developing a comprehensive understanding of the Scope of Work delineation between the three disciplines. They will be able to comprehend specifications/drawings, and correlate them together in order to effectively convey this information within the department, and to utilize the information effectively to control the interactions with subcontractors/suppliers for accurate scopes of work and pricing. They will be able to read the Front End Specifications to determine the Project basics such as Closing Dates, Pre-Tender Site Visits, Scope of Work, etc. The Junior Estimator will be responsible for basic takeoffs within their discipline utilizing computer software, soliciting for pricing, and analyzing the quotations submitted by their supplier/subcontractor.

Job Description:

  • Identify and Understand the Mechanical Scope, drawings and specifications.
  • Provide Bid Document and Estimate notes that provide short relevant information related to the Mechanical Scope
  • Identify and Understand Civil, Architectural and Electrical scope of works shown on the drawings.
  • Prepare a complete Valve and Gate take-offs using the related spreadsheets.
  • Prepare Bid Recaps and solicit suppliers and subcontractors as required by the scope/ drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare and complete Sheet Metal and HVAC Equipment take-off within the Accubid System.
  • Prepare and complete Ductwork take-off within Fastduct System.
  • Prepare and complete the Sheet Metal Subcontractor Comparison Spreadsheet.
  • Prepare and complete the Plumbing materials and equipment take-off within the Accubid System.
  • Set up and review Project Closeout in Accubid.
  • Prepare and attend site visits as required.
  • Prepare and attend internal meetings.
  • Prepare RFI’s if required.
  • Review all addendums (and update your documents), sign off AFTER tender documents have been updated.
  • Follow up solicitations, review scopes and quotes to determine the compliance to drawings and specifications.
  • Support other departments as required.
  • Finalize the HVAC and/ or the Plumbing Estimate within Accubid.
  • Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management executives and external contacts at all times.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external personnel.
  • Self-motivated to learn while demonstrating a strong work ethic.
  • Attention to detail, mathematical, analytical skills and accuracy.
  • Work well under pressure, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for assigned tasks and tender closings.
  • Able to effectively communicate with all types of staff, including technical, professional, and upper management.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in construction/engineering, Construction Technology, or relevant trade experience.
  • JUNIOR:  0-3 year’s industry experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret building specifications, drawings and as-builds.
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates.
  • Ability to use cost-estimating software to prepare cost quotes and bids.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (excel, word, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and listening communications skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision.
  • Collaborative in dealing with fellow employees. The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues.
  • Receptive to change - can adapt to changing circumstances.
