NAC Makes Significant Progress on Capilano Westburnco Pump Station Project
Our team has been making impressive strides on the Capilano Westburnco Pump Station project in North Vancouver, BC. This high-profile project for Metro Vancouver, situated in the scenic Capilano Watershed next to the Cleveland Dam water reservoir and park, showcases NAC's expertise in complex infrastructure development.
Project Overview
The project encompasses several key components:
- A Powerhouse building: A concrete structure with metal cladding, housing three owner-supplied backup diesel generators
- A concrete-encased Fuel Vault: Partially buried, containing three diesel storage tanks to feed the generators
- A 500m+ duct bank: Connecting the backup power to the existing Capilano pump station
- A new Gatehouse: Positioned at the center of the site entrance
Recent Milestones
We're pleased to report significant progress across multiple fronts:
- Powerhouse Building: All major walls have been completed, with the generator room slab on grade and scheduled for pouring in the coming week. Our structural steel subcontractor is set to begin work on the roof beams shortly.
- Fuel Vault: The concrete beams and slab are now complete, with two sections of walls already erected and momentum building.
- Generator Installation: A new 2.8 MW generator has been successfully delivered and placed inside the Powerhouse building.
- Site Infrastructure: Our division 2 subcontractor is steadily progressing with storm and sewer work, moving from the Cleveland Dam area towards the new buildings. Duct bank trenching into the park is set to commence in the coming month.
- Environmental Considerations: A sophisticated temporary dewatering system is in place, ensuring all water is properly treated and tested before being discharged into the Capilano River in compliance with environmental regulations.
Ongoing Work and Challenges
The project team is actively engaged in discussions with Metro Vancouver, WSP, and RAM regarding the routing, supply, and installation of large cabling runs for the duct bank. Electrical works to date include underground ductwork and concrete encasement for various MCC and Switchgear sections, along with extensive grounding installations for both the Powerhouse and Fuel Vault.
Plumbing rough-in is nearly complete for the Powerhouse, with work on the Fuel Vault set to begin soon. This will include the installation of diesel fuel lines, water lines, and drains.
Looking Ahead
As we move into the warmer months, we anticipate even greater momentum on this project. The team's dedication to organization, planning, and coordination has been crucial in managing this complex project in a high-profile, environmentally sensitive area.
We're proud of the progress made so far and look forward to continuing our work on this important infrastructure project for the Metro Vancouver region. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach key milestones in the coming months.
