Cataraqui Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

The project generally consists of various upgrades to existing works and the construction of new works to enhance the level of treatment and expand the plant’s capacity from 38,800 m3/day to 55,000 m3/day.

The scope for this project generally includes the following:

  • Replacement of the existing Headworks
  • Building to house new fine screens, new vortex grit tanks, their auxiliary systems, and odour control system
  • Modifications to existing primary clarifiers and aeration tanks to create four new retrofitted primary clarifiers
  • Construction of a new Biological Aerated Filter (“BAF”) facility complete with a Primary Effluent Pumping Station, six BAF treatment cells, two BAF backwash residuals equalization/holding tanks, and building space to house process equipment, new boilers, new electrical equipment, and administration and laboratory functions
  • Construction of a new Biosolids Dewatering and Storage Facility to house new centrifuges, biosolids storage bunkers, polymer storage/feed systems, dewatered biosolids conveyors, and odour control systems along with all other ancillary process and building equipment
  • Retrofit of an existing Chemical Building to house new electrical equipment, and other ancillary equipment
  • Retrofit of an existing Blower Building to house new chemical storage and dosing equipment, and new electrical equipment
  • Demolition of the existing electrical substation, and construction of a new electrical switchgear building, outdoor transformers, and backup generator along with a grounding grid
  • Construction of two new tunnels to connect the BAF facility and Biosolids Dewatering and Storage Facility to other areas of the plant
  • Site-wide instrumentation and control upgrades.
