Malahat Nation Water and Sewer System Upgrade Progresses Under IPD Model

NAC Constructors, together with Joint Venture partner Chandos Construction, is advancing construction on the Malahat Nation Water and Sewer System Upgrade—an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) initiative that will deliver modern, reliable water and wastewater services to the community. The project team also includes design partner Urban Systems Ltd. and earthworks partner Copcan Civil, with additional island-based contractors playing a key role in site works.

Over the past several months, the team has been mobilizing to site, driving construction progress, and supporting design development. Significant long-lead procurements have also been secured, ensuring critical process and electrical equipment will be in place to meet project milestones.

At the Water Treatment Plant, key achievements include:

  • Completion of bulk excavation and site preparation.
  • Pouring reservoir tank footings, backfilling, and installing tank starter rings.
  • Forming and pouring tank foundations, with delivery of glass-fused steel tanks anticipated later this summer.
  • Advancing foundations and footings for the operations building, with concrete pours completed in July and wall construction now underway.

At the Wastewater Treatment Plant, construction is also moving forward:

  • Subgrade preparation for the operations and headworks buildings is complete.
  • Formwork is underway on the building footings.
  • Excavation and prep for the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) tanks has been completed, with a 200m³ foundation pour executed last week.

With major structural scopes underway, the project is on track to transition into mechanical and electrical phases in the months ahead.

Supported by funding from Indigenous Services Canada and the Canada Infrastructure Bank, this initiative represents a significant investment in modern utility infrastructure for the Malahat Nation and positions the community for long-term growth. NAC is proud to contribute its expertise and to work alongside our IPD partners to deliver a high-quality, future-ready system.
